Better Ecommerce Pattern Language

November 1st, 2005

So it seems Guy has a problem adding to my wiki on ecommerce, which I understand completely. There is always a tension between creating enough content so that people can have some idea of where it’s all going AND excluding people by having done it all.

I’m interested that Guy also went through the “aren’t we giving away the crown jewels here” stage, something which I regularly feel too.

Could I suggest to you Guy that if you only have one gem you’d like to share to start your own complimentary wiki (or just write a lengthy blog article) and I will point to yours (quoting heaviliy).

In the PatternAims page I say “Many pattern languages exist in a vacuum, in that they don’t “plug into” other existing patterns” and I mean it. If I could point at single chapters in Steve Krug’s or Don Norman’s book I would. I shamelessly nicked “DesignOneTwoThree” from a online article I found in about 1997 and can’t find again (it had example pictures and everything).

So, Guy (and any others lurking) write a blog article with a lovely pattern-esque title, tell me about it and I’ll work it in. And in the fullness of time we may even have password protected areas of “really hot shit ideas” for mine and your clients only with the common sense out there hopefully doing some good in a small way, if that doesn’t sound too arrogant.
