MicroWiki

April 4th, 2006   3 Comments

For a day or so, I have used MicroWiki, but found that after 4 days nobody has replied to my support questions which for me are all show stoppers.

What I really liked about microwiki was how well it could integrate with Wordpress… but every time I edit a page it extra-escapes the quote marks… hell even the microwiki pages has the same problem…. “Click the \\\”log in now\\\” l”

4 days? There is one developer on this project - me - and I have a life outside of MicroWiki, so when I let the support questions accrue it’s not because I’m ignoring you, it’s because I’ll get to it when I get to it. Your “show stopper” bugs are pretty trivial compared to the other things I happened to be doing when you needed to have a MicroWiki fix right now.

Regardless of all that, version 2.0.2 is available for download, and it should fix at least the one issue you’re talking about here. As for the others, integration with WordPress in the method you described is not a priority for me, but I’ll consider what you’ve posted.

You have a life? I thought you said you were a developer… :-)

I’m sorry Owen, but I was talking about this with a developer friend about how expectations have changed over the years… radically. Instead of submitting a bug report and forgetting about it… I’m installing software before the developer has started coding it.

One of the main metrics for a piece of software is “Brain turnover”… if people aren’t online within the last week, then it’s a bit worring. That said, I’m off for the week…

Thanks for the bug fix, it’s much appreciated… which is mainly why I blogged (I couldn’t find your email address anywhere)

Sadly, I’m quite spread out development-wise. Aside from MicroWiki (and all of the other Micro* products, like MicroShop), I also do a substantial amount of WordPress coding. You might not have noticed, but I recently moved RedAlt to a new server to improve performance. I was also recently in Houston giving training on MicroWiki to a small company that is using it. Plus I have a day job and a family and play video games on occasion.

I do realize that quick responses have become expected these days, but I can’t figure out why anyone would think that reasonable. It takes time to write a fix and test it. I suspect that in many cases, software that people find acceptable because of the bug turnover rate are actually less tested than one would hope. Hopefully not in this case.

If I’ve read you right, I hope you enjoy your week off and that nobody gives you grief for not responding immediately while you’re away. ;)
