I Want Jam On It

Ross sent me a link to Jam Legend and I think he thinks I’d like it (or was he just winding me up?). It’s a Guitar Hero Online kinda thingy, which is all very well if you insist that you don’t want to play an instrument so much that you’re happy to spend more time not learning how to play an instrument than you are to invest in twiddling around with a ukulele.

The second I worked out how to play Jam Legend, I wanted to wander off the beaten path and actually jam. Or do I?

Whilst Jam Legend is clearly very fantastic from a design and technical point of view, there’s something creepy I don’t like about it… Creepy in the way there are so many ways that fun and creativity are being provided for us, rather than being something you struggle with, explore and shape yourself.

I’m not about to waffle on about how things were much better in the old days when we used to prepare out guitar solos with a 12 inch ruler and pencils and compete in the playground, but there is something wrong, wrong, wrong about the whole concept of Jam Legend and others. Or should I just lighten up and accept that it’s only a game… and maybe not the sort of thing for an old fart like me.

I mean…. why has it only got five strings? Presumably I’m so Kerrang! that I’ve already broken one. Five?

p.s I have 3 invites left if you wanna join my band :-)

Well I thought you’d like it!

Like you I play a real instrument (badly in my case) but I view ‘games’ like Jam Legend, Guitar Hero etc. as just that – games.

I also enjoy rally games on the PS2 and can actually drive too. But playing as Colin McCrae doesn’t mean I then need to go out around the country roads where I live and have my daughter shout out “Daddy, 200 yards, left, 3″ at me.

So, yes, in short… lighten up mate!
