Graphs that lie

November 3rd, 2008   1 Comment

In Graphs that lie by Phil Gyford, he shows how the media mis-use graphs to fuel the credit crunch frenzy.

But also look at the graphic being used by the BBC news to show a 0.5% drop in something or other. I can’t remember exactly what it was referring to and I aplogise for the quality (I snapped it off the telly).

A bit more responsibility in the area of data-presentation  from the BBC would be welcome before they go totally “The Day Today“. And look at the downward arrow on the “n”… as if we needed a graphic designer’s reminder of what down means… There probably isn’t an organisation called OfChart… but should be… As Phil says, it’s lying.

p.s. Here’s another sign of the times from Gap in York, but I’m not quite sure what this one means…. you decide…

That n really got me too. I think the BBC has really taken a funny turn over the last few months.
