Your design should, visually communicate 3 clear concepts.

  • Am I in the right place? Does the StrapLine tell me what this site is for or is it vague?
  • Am I convinced by this business? Does it have a good design, does it have all the things this site should have, is it making the right noises about delivery, can I explore and be further convinced?
  • Now what should I do? Tell your visitor EXACTLY WHAT they should do? Buy something? Get in touch? Request a Quote?

If you can't look at your design and easily answer these questions, neither will the visitor to your site. Given that you will probably be selling things on your site, can you BuyFromTheHomePage ?

In the example above, a screen of the Blooming Marvellous site.

  • The tagline, "for you and your baby" along with the "Blooming" part of the title tell me I'm probably in the right place.
  • The picture of a baby and the TriggerWords in the navigation helps persuade me I am on the right site. There were links lower down the page to "Order free catalogue" (only a BIG company could print a catalogue as well, right? And "Find A Shop" (wow! They have real shops too).. and "Returns". All very convicing stuff (even if I don't take advantage of them)
  • But the "What Should I do" aspect of this page is weak, with the "Add To Basket" button being greyed out almost.
